Heroes Track Proposed Protocol

The Heroes Track is a trauma-focused modality created especially for active military, military veterans and first responders.  This population is unique in their experiences within their career fields, their transitions back as civilians, possible loss of identity and reintegration into their family systems and social circles.  There is also the struggle with the stigma of military personnel and first responders seeking mental health assistance that keeps these individuals silent in their own interpersonal wars. As a result, many turn to drugs and alcohol to ease the emotional pain and debilitating symptoms that present.  It is imperative that these Heroes are able to discuss and process their own personal battles amongst other Heroes who can speak the lingo, understand the struggle and culture and relate to the experiences. It is also crucial that both mental health and addiction struggles, be addressed simultaneously.  A Hero has automatic survival thoughts and behaviors that become reinforced by their careers and, if the Hero is not able to integrate both career and civilian skills, it can become a huge detriment to their every day lives.

Objectives:

  1. To understand the importance of treating trauma and addiction simultaneously
  2. To gain an understanding of the re-enforcement cycle between trauma and addiction
  3. Identify and understand responders occupational traits and behaviors that complicate and sabotage treatment.
  4. Learn ways to build rapport with responders that help overcome treatment barriers.
